The position is tied to the research group for personality and social psychology at the department of psychology. This group studies how attitudes and group behaviors are shaped by interplay between personality and social psychological factors (e.g., social identities and explicit/implicit processes). Members of the research group collaborate with a number of scholars in Europe, USA and Oceania, and publish regularly in prominent international journals.
Project description: Two ongoing projects examine associations between basic personality differences and susceptibility to radicalization and group extremism. The current position is associated with one of these projects. A central part of this project is a longitudinal study of associations between, for example, low openness to experience and emerging support for extremism (especially Islamist extremism). The project also involves experimental studies that focus on intergroup competition and outgroup threats, for example.
To qualify for a doctoral position in Psychology at Uppsala University, the applicant must have a master´s degree either including or in addition a minimum of 90 Swedish study credits in psychology. Applicants who have obtained qualifications equivalent or comparable to the criteria described above abroad are also eligible to apply. Other qualifications:The successful candidate is expected to be well-versed with personality as well as social psychology, and have experience of empirical research in these fields (ideally, including both experimental and survey methods). This experience should be demonstrated in a bachelor’s or master’s thesis, or equivalent publication. There is also an emphasis on strong statistical skills, and experience with advanced statistical/mathematical software, such as Mplus, MATLAB, or R. Experience from similar projects as the current one are also considered an asset.
The sucessful applicant will be supported by an employment as a PhD for 4 full years and primarily engage in research. Other work at the Department such as teaching and administration can optionally be included (max 20%).
