Postdoctoral Research Position in Immunogenomics/Rheumatology
Sort on published: 2017-11-23
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
We are seeking a highly motivated post-doc with a strong interest in rheumatology and immunology to join the research group for Rheumatology/systemic autoimmunity at the Department of Medical Sciences. The group studies inflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Sjögren’s syndrome. We perform extensive studies on genetic material and cells from patients and healthy individuals with the aim of understanding the underlying cause for disease to aid in the development of new and effective treatments. We collaborate on both the national and international level with clinicians and researchers and also with the pharmaceutical industry. For more information about the research group, please see: http://www.medsci.uu.se/forskning/reumatologi/.
Our research group have contributed to the identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in >25 loci associated with an increased susceptibility to SLE. Some of these risk-SNPs are also associated with a more severe disease or specific clinical manifestations. The underlying molecular mechanisms whereby these risk SNPs contribute to SLE is largely unknown. The current project aims at defining how genetic risk variants in rheumatic disease affect the immune system. Key tasks involve developing in-vitro methods to assess the functional impact of genetic risk variants using a broad range of molecular biology techniques, and applying these methods on primary cells from genotyped patients and healthy individuals. Our new employee should be able to independently plan and perform studies as well as analyze and present data from these studies.
- Doctoral degree in a relevant area, e.g. medicine, immunology, molecular biology, biomedicine, biotechnology or pharmacology
- Documented experience of cell & molecular biological work in primary cells and/or cell-lines.
- Deep knowledge in either of i) immunology ii) cell biology, ii) rheumatology
- Good writing and verbal communication skills in English
Additional meriting skills:
- Documented experience of multi-color flow cytometry, EMSA, reporter-assays, gene-silencing/editing or other methods applicable to defining the functional implications of genetic variation.
- Documented experience of genetic and/or bioinformatic analysis
Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for the position, in particular the ability to collaborate with other researchers, clinicians and bioinformaticians. We are looking for candidates with the ability to work independently and assume responsibility for their duties.
