Sort on published: 2017-12-18
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The professorship entails principal responsibility for research and doctoral-level (third cycle) courses and study programmes in the subject area neuroradiology. The position includes teaching in education at basic (first-cycle, Bachelor), advanced (second-cycle, Master) and research (third-cycle, doctoral) levels. Supervision of doctoral and other students and leadership of an active neuroradiology research group is included. Duties also include monitoring developments in the appointee’s own subject area and those in society at large that have a major bearing on work at the University. Administrative tasks may also be included. Clinical practice in neuroradiology is included and the position will be combined with a position as a specialist physician at Uppsala University Hospital.
A candidate who has shown both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, Section 3) is eligible for employment as professor. Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is that they must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.
Research expertise must have been demonstrated by means of independent research contributions and by the candidate’s work being of consistently high quality by international and national standards. The applicant must have demonstrated proficiency in planning, initiating, leading and developing research; have shown a capacity to obtain research grants on a competitive basis; and exhibit well-documented expertise in supervising students at postgraduate level. The candidate’s contributions to the international and national academic community will be assessed on such criteria as quality and scale of publication in the most relevant publication channels in the subject.
Expertise in teaching must have been demonstrated through qualifications in education and teaching (see Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, §23). In addition, the candidate must show well- documented proficiency in supervision at basic (first-cycle, Bachelor) and advanced (second-cycle, Master) level. A precondition for teaching expertise being considered to exist is completion of academic teacher training relevant for the work, comprising at least ten weeks, or corresponding knowledge. If special reasons exist, this academic teacher training may be implemented during the first two years of the position. The teacher training must include training in supervision of researchers.
The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish or English, unless special reasons exist.
To eligible for this position, the candidate must have a specialist qualification in radiology with subspecialty in or focus on neuroradiology. For information on obtaining a specialist qualification, see The National Board of Health and Welfare (http://www.socialstyrelsen.se/english). If the person offered the appointment also meets Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for appointment as a consultant physician, the appointee will be offered a position combined with a position as a consultant physician.
In selection of the person to be appointed to this professorship, weight will be assigned primarily to research expertise and, thereafter, to teaching expertise. Nevertheless, the assessment criteria will be weighed in such a way that an applicant judged to be much more proficient in teaching than one who is judged to be somewhat more proficient in research may be ranked ahead of the latter. Clinical expertise is also important for the position and will be given weight.
In assessment of research expertise, quality of scholarship will be the primary consideration. The candidate’s research qualifications in the area of neuroradiology will also be considered. The scope of the research, mainly in terms of its depth and breadth, will be given weight. Ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at postgraduate level, capacity to obtain research funding on a competitive basis and a demonstrated ability to interact with others both within the discipline concerned and with the community at large will also be given weight.
In assessment of teaching expertise, the quality of teaching will be the primary consideration. Scale, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be considered important. Moreover, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, and also to connect the teaching with research, on the basis of research in the subject concerned, as well as skill in subject didactics and academic teaching theory and practice, will be given weight. Teaching expertise also includes a capacity for interaction with colleagues in and outside the University concerning academic teaching issues.
Clinical expertise is described in Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University §25 as clinical work, clinical education and participation in clinical development. Clinical development entails such work as measures that have improved healthcare or made it more efficient.
Assessment criteria for other expertise
Management expertise and administrative expertise are of importance for the appointment and will be given weight. The ability to collaborate with the community at large and also to inform others about research and development will be taken into consideration.
Management expertise is shown by being able to lead work and staff, make decisions, take responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what is needed for efficient attainment of common goals.
Abilities to coordinate groups, to help create a sense of commitment, involvement and enjoyment of work and to deal with conflicts are further examples of demonstrated expertise.
In assessment of the candidate’s proficiency in collaboration, experience of and skill in popularising scientific work, editing and other activities relating to exchange of knowledge between academia and society at large, and experience of innovation and entrepreneurship will be given weight.
All qualifications must be documented to enable both quality and scope to be assessed.
When the University appoints new teachers, the candidate chosen will be the person who, following an overall qualitative assessment of skills and proficiency, is judged to have the best prospects of implementing and developing the duties concerned and also of helping to bring about favourable development of the work.
The aspect of gender equality will be applied if an overall qualitative assessment shows that two candidates of different genders have equivalent or virtually equivalent qualifications.
Applicants’ parental leave, part-time work due to child care, trade union positions, military service and similar commitments are considered as qualifying employment experience.
