Application expert at the center for supercomputers
Sort on published: 2017-12-05
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science) is hosted by the Department of Information Technology, at Uppsala University and is one of the six centers in the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC). UPPMAX is also Uppsala University's resource of high-performance computers, large-scale storage and know-how in high-performance computing (HPC). The team of highly skilled System Administrators and Application Experts at UPPMAX provides advanced user support to a user community of about a thousand researchers in a wide variety of scientific domains.
The life-science community, mainly using SNIC-UPPMAX resources, is currently the largest group of data-intensive users in SNIC. This area is rapidly evolving both regarding sequencing technology and analysis methods. With support from Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), UPPMAX strives to provide an extensive and up-to-date bioinformatics software stack. A need that is growing on the user side is support regarding data management issues such as detecting and addressing technical "bad usage" of our storage systems (e.g. disruptively inefficient access patterns), user training in data management best practices, data life cycle, and the handling of sensitive data in SNIC, as well as helping users with questions or problems related to big data. Besides issues related to data-intensive computing, we also see a need for HPC-related support, e.g. performance profiling of parallel programs.
We are looking for an application expert to handle advanced software and database installations on the UPPMAX clusters (50%) and to provide advanced user support (50%) regarding data management or other areas of expertise where we see a need, such as HPC code and algorithm development or advanced use of Python. The position is formally placed at the Department of Information Technology within UPPMAX.
The successful candidate holds a PhD in a relevant area that can, e.g., be computational science (bioinformatics, computational chemistry, computational physics etc), scientific computing, or computer science. Documented skills in software and database installation are a requirement, and experience from large-scale computing environments is a merit. Ability to handle English as a working language is a requirement, and Swedish skills are a merit.
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
