Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
At the Ångström Laboratory, Department of Engineering Sciences, Division of Solid State Electronics (http://www.teknik.uu.se/solid-state-electronics).
Starting date spring 2018 or according to agreement.
The position is full-time (100%) for a duration of two years.
The research project will be conducted as part of a collaborative effort between FREIA and Solid State Electronics divisions, both situated at the Ångström Laboratory. At the FREIA laboratory, the general focus is on developing particle accelerator technology that can be used in large research facilities, such as CERN, ESRF, DESY, European Spallation Source (ESS), etc. More information can be found at http://www.physics.uu.se/research/freia-lab/research-areas/
The work is performed in close collaboration with large EU industry, within the new Eurostars-project ENEFRF and aims to develop the next generation RF-sources for isotope producing cyclotrons. In the project, the research and development targets four major sections: (1) highly efficient RF power amplifiers involving the study of different topologies, such as the class E at high power levels; (2) novel techniques for power splitting using FPGAs for digital waveform generation; (3) highly efficient RF power combination for solid state power amplifiers and (4) characterization of new semiconductor transistors involving, among others load pull measurements. Other aspects related to the thermal behaviour, reliability and lifetime of transistors will also be investigated.
The purpose of this project is to study new transistors using load-pull measurements and develop an active load-pull measurement set-up for few hundreds MHz. In addition, develop highly efficient power amplifiers (e.g. class E) and high power combiners, thereof to reach the nominal power levels of 10 and 20 kW in CW for the operation of a cyclotron. In the group, recent work has validated the development of a 10 kW demonstrator at 352 MHz, with high efficiency. We are therefore looking for a candidate with previous experience in transistor level load-pull measurements and large-signal modelling, but also on high power amplifiers and power combiners.
To qualify for an employment on a post-doctoral position the applicant must hold a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended on circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in trade unions etc.
The applicant must have a PhD in microwave engineering with a focus on active microwave components or an equivalent education in a nearby scientific field. A background in load-pull measurements and highly efficient RF power amplifiers is highly meriting. The applicant should have good communication skills and both very good written and spoken English. The candidate should be goal oriented, structured, be able to work independently as well as in a group, and have a high level of motivation.
Applications should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, PhD thesis and other relevant documents.
