Postdoctoral position in computer architecture: memory systems and machine learning

The Department of Information Technology (www.it.uu.se) holds a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The department has about 200 employees, including 80 senior faculty and 80 PhD students. More than 3000 students are enrolled annually.
This project will investigate the use of machine learning for memory system optimization both as a tool to optimize designs (offline) and to adapt to dynamic behavior (online). We welcome applicants with computer architecture backgrounds and/or machine learning backgrounds. The position is part of the Automating System SpeSific Model-Based LEarning (ASSEMBLE) project, which combines researches in machine learning, control theory, compilation, and architecture to develop new tools to support the use of machine learning across different fields. As a member of ASSEMBLE you will work with machine learning experts and researchers to understand how to apply and integrate probabilistic programming and neural networks for memory system optimization. The expected results are both approaches to using these techniques for better offline design (optimization, analysis) and the development of architectural designs that can support the execution of the algorithms at runtime to aid data placement decisions. The position is for two years and may include teaching (in English or Swedish) depending on availability and your career interests.
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
Candidates should have expertise in architecture and/or memory system design. The candidate must clearly document a high degree of self-motivation in the application. In addition, the applicant must be able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work. These competencies are as important as the technical qualifications.
Excellent skills in spoken and written English are required.
Experience with machine learning techniques or probabilistic programming is a plus, but not a requirement as we have the expertise to teach these as part of the project
Working in Sweden:
Sweden is a fantastic place for living and working. Swedes are friendly and speak excellent English. The quality of life is high, with a strong emphasis on outdoor activities. The Swedish working climate emphasizes an open atmosphere, with active discussions involving both junior and senior staff. The application must include a statement (at most 2 pages) of the applicant’s motivation for applying for this position, including the candidate’s research interests and how they will support this project, a description of PhD thesis, and evidence of self-motivation and constructive teamwork. At least one letter of recommendation and contact information for references should be provided directly by the references to Prof. Black-Schaffer.
