Entry requirements

Participation in Introduction to Sustainable Destination Development. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • analyse and critically evaluate the special conditions for entrepreneurship in the tourism industry from a sustainability perspective,
  • account for the meaning of different entrepreneurial action strategies, especially in the tourism industry and from a sustainability perspective,
  • account for and problematise the pros and cons of working in local networks of actors - authorities, organisations and companies,
  • describe different ways of dealing with value and value creation from a particular ethical perspective and sustainability perspective,
  • give an account of different theoretical perspectives on entrepreneurship, sustainability and tourism industry,
  • give an account of basic prerequisites for business activities in the tourism industry.

Content

The course addresses the following moments:

  • introduction to action strategies and entrepreneurship, as well as service companies and management, especially from a sustainability perspective.
  • analysis and critical discussion of these action strategies and theoretical perspecitves in interaction with the company's context in the tourism industry, especially from a sustainability perspective.
  • customer and staff critical role and interaction in service companies, especially from a sustainability perspective.

  • basic ethical perspective on entrepreneurship in the tourism industry, especially from a sustainability perspective with focus on tourism entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

  • interplay with local and regional actors, including authorities and other major organisations with focus on tourism destinations and sustainability.

  • conditions to be able to establish and develop a service-providing organisation, especially from a sustainability perspective.

Instruction

Lectures, workshops, seminars, study visits and guest lectures.

Assessment

Written home exam (5 credits) as well as written and oral group assignments (2.5 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
