Greek and Byzantine Studies

Aims

The programme, which comprises four terms full-time studies, aims to develop students' competence within the main field of study. The programme prepares students for Ph.D studies in the main field of study and for careers in, for example, education, publishing and translation.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the Programme students will be able to

• show good knowledge of the main field of study in terms of language, linguistics or literature
• show knowledge of the methods and main issues of linguistic or literary studies;
• gather and process complex theoretical material of relevance to the field of study;
• actively stay abreast of developments and research in the area of specialisation;
• show the ability to critically and independently review the work of others;
• participate actively in seminar discussions by making informed contributions and also by being able to lead such discussions;
• independently produce and present work in a manner showing solid knowledge of the conventions of academic writing;
• work with a high degree of independence to delimit, structure, and carry out a research task of relevance to the selected specialisation;
• independently compose and defend an academic degree project worth 30 academic credits (for the Swedish magister degree 15 academic credits);
• give oral and written accounts of important aspects of the selected
• show an ability to reflect on the social and ethical dimensions of research.

Layout of the programme

The programme covers two years (120 academic credits) of studies within the following main fields of studies:

• Finno-Ugric languages
• Greek and Byzantine studies
• Indology
• Iranian languages
• Chinese
• Latin
• Linguistics
• Romance languages
• Semitic Language
• Slavic languages
• Turkic languages
• German

The program include courses and independent degree projects. During the first year, a series of work-oriented seminar and study visits are common to all students in the program.

The courses within the program vary depending on the main field of study.

Term 1

The first term includes two program-based courses - a course in theory and method as well as a course with work-oriented lectures and study visits. In addition, courses are taught within the respective main field of study.

Term 2

The second term is devoted to specialization in the main field of study, 15 higher education credits. The remaining 15 credits consist of a program-wide methodology course (7.5 credits) and an elective course in the main the field of study or another subject (7.5 credits).

Terms 3 and 4

The third and fourth terms are devoted to independent degree projects comprising 15 or 30 credits and elective courses in the main field study or other subjects. Opportunities for internships comprising 7.5 credits or 15 credits are available.

Instruction

Instruction, discussions and examinations can take place in Swedish, English or the selected language.

Some course components require mandatory attendance. Studies conducted at a foreign university may be included in the degree. During the first term of the program, there is a seminar series with invited guest lecturers representing different professions with language orientation.

In addition to the seminars, there are also visits to language-oriented workplaces. The seminars and workplace visits are common to all students within the program, provide valuable insights into professional life, and provide an opportunity to make personal contacts with future employers. There are also opportunities for internships.

Some courses or course components are offered as distance courses with online seminars.

Degree

The program leads to a Master's degree with one of the following main fields of study: Finno-Ugric Languages, Greek and Byzantinology, Indology, Iranian languages, Chinese, Latin, General inguistics, Romance Languages, Semitic Languages, Slavic Languages, Turkic Languages and German.

The opportunity is also offered to read only the first two semesters of the program, which gives a one year Master's degree comprising 60 higher education credits. The one year Master's degree gives admission to postgraduate education.
