Eurasian Studies

Eurasian studies is a multidisciplinary subject, based on analytical perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities, above all history, political science, sociology, economy, law and international relations. It covers a wide geographical area from the Baltic Sea to the Caucasus and Central Asia. Eurasian studies makes use of a number of different approaches, methods and theories from different disciplines in order to interpret and explain cultural, social, economic, political, and ideational processes and phenomena in the area.

The field of Eurasian studies analyses societal developments in the Eurasian area as well as its international relations. The focus is on issues of post-Soviet transformation, Russia's role in world politics, identity formation, as well as the way history and culture shape perceptions at both the macro and the micro level. Of particular concern are issues of democratisation. Language training is also included in Eurasian studies.

The Master's Programme in Russian and Eurasian Studies prepares students for a professional career as area specialists in public administration, government agencies, organisations, media and private companies at both national and international level. The knowledge and skills acquired also form a basis for doctoral education in the disciplinary domains of the humanities and social sciences.
