Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student will have an enhanced knowledge of general basic grammar, an expanded vocabulary, both generally and in their chosen field of expertise, an ability to communicate both orally and in writing, and an increased ability to understand texts in their chosen field of expertise.

The goals for each course component are given below.

Component 1. Langauge structure (7.5 credits)

Upon completing the component students will

master English elementary grammatical rules and structures, particularly regarding contrastive differences

have knowledge of word formation and vocabulary, including words that can be easily confused, so-called false friends

able to apply the rules of grammar in free and controlled production

master the translation of general Swedish texts into English

Component 2. Technical communication (7.5 credits)

Upon completing the component students will

master specific terms and stylistic norms and differences in their chosen field of expertise

have developed the ability to read and discuss texts in their chosen field of expertise

be able to write short reports

master the translation of Swedish texts into English in their chosen field of expertise

Content

The course consists of two components.

Component 1. Language structure, 7.5 credits

Component 1 contains general language skill elements as regards grammar, translation and word formation.

Component 2. Technical communication, 7.5 credits

Component 2 includes training in communicative application of language skills in their chosen field of expertise.

Instruction

Component 1. Language structure (7.5 credits)

The component focuses on the elementary grammatical structures of English and their practical use in the translation of simple texts into English. The course includes a systematic review of English grammar with exercises. Vocabulary and word formation with a special focus on words where there is a high risk of confusion with Swedish meanings, known as false friends, are also included Some dictionaries exercises.

Component 2. Technical communication (7.5 HE credits)

The component contains reading of about 500 pages of English language nonfiction and magazine - and newspaper text that partially is reported and discussed in class. To train the ability to understand English language texts within the chosen field of expertise, the teaching includes exercises to present factually correct reports on the read material in English. Other exercises train applied language skills within the specialist field, e.g. translation to and from English. Teaching also includes exercises to lead and participate in discussions in English within the specialist field. The component includes continuous assessment; participation is mandatory.

Assessment

Examination of the two components is done through oral presentations, written assignments and written exam. Grades used are either Fail, Pass, or Pass with Distinction.

To receive a grade of Pass with Distinction for the whole course, students must have achieved the grade of Pass with Distinction in at least one of the two components.

Students who fail a certain examination twice have the right upon request, following consultation with the head of department, to have another examiner appointed.

Other directives

For admission to the course English A32 students must have at least a passing grade for the entire course.

The course cannot be counted toward a degree together with the courses English A1, A2, A4, A6, GLS1 or HS1.

Results that are more than five years old are normally not recognised if the syllabus for the course component has been changed.

If the syllabus or course reading for a component has been changed, students have a right to be examined under the original syllabus and course reading on two occasions during the following semester. Normally this right then expires. Otherwise there are no limitations on the number of examination opportunities.
