Entry requirements

60 credits in biology, or 45 credits in biology and 15 credits in chemistry or earth science

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • search biological information on the web,
  • use basic software for studies of DNA sequences and protein structures,
  • use bioinformatics tools to solve biological problems, and
  • interpret results from various computer based methods.

Content

Treated issues; Compile sequence data. Basic sequence analysis. Databases and search in databases. Patterns in DNA sequences. Secondary structures. Three-dimensional structures of proteins. Alignments. Phylogenetic reconstructions. Metabolic reconstructions.

Instruction

Teaching consists of a series of problem-based computer exercises.

Assessment

Problem-based computer exercises (3 credits). In addition a written examination by the end of the course (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
