The Department of Women's and Children's Health conducts research, postgraduate education and training in gynecology, obstetrics, perinatal medicine, paediatrics, international health, women's medicine and clinical psychology in health care. Global Health and Migration is a profile area for the department. The activity is integrated with the Women and Children division at University Hospital and National Centre for women's safety. International Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) is a leading research and education centre at Uppsala University that works for improved global health with special emphasis on women’s and children’s health and nutrition. The education and research programmes address the health challenges in low- and middle-income countries and in humanitarian crises. By developing and evaluating interventions and new strategies for tackling priority health problems, IMCH makes important contributions towards equitable global health.
Description of Subject Area: Global Health is the health as well as health problems and diseases of populations in a global context and transcends the perspectives and concerns of individual nations, or has global political and economic importance. It deals with needs of global improvement of health, reduction of gaps in health conditions, and protection against global threats against health with special emphasis on vulnerable groups.
The subject area Global Health is very dynamic and today, the subject area even include sustainability, implementation, health systems, migration, non-infectious diseases and nutrition. The international literature often emphasize the rights- and equality perspective, that is equal access health care as a human right, health and sickness in relation to development as well as covariance between health and socioeconomic/sociocultural factors.
Duties: The position includes teaching with a focus on global migration and qualitative methods and research within the area of Global Health. Teaching duties include being responsible for entire courses and course administration, lectures, seminars, and other pedagogical methods like case methodology, "flipped class rooms" or e-based learning, supervision of students individual projects and examinations.
The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area of Global Health and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. In addition it is expected that the holder develop networks with other actors within the field, develop research- and teaching methods, as well as being program coordinator for the master program in Global Health at times.
Eligibility requirements: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as senior lecturer are persons who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research competence. Applicants must also have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.
Experience in research and teaching within the field of global migration and qualitative research methodology is a requirement. Experience in research and teaching in humanitarian assistance is favorable. The applicant should have documented broad competence in relevant research methods, and documented experience in teaching in English. Meriting in general is experience of multidisciplinary research and collaboration with other institutions and universities in education and research, as well as documented supervision skills.
Assessment Criteria: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal weight.
In assessment of research expertise quality of research and research merits in Global Health will be of primary consideration. The scope of the candidate's research, mainly in terms of depth and breadth, will also be considered important. Ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at postgraduate level, capacity to obtain research funding on a competitive basis and a demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within the discipline concerned and with the community at large will also be given weight.
In assessment of teaching expertise, teaching quality and competence must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Moreover, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, and also to connect the teaching with research, on the basis of research in the subject concerned, as well as skill in subject didatics and academic teaching theory and practice, will be given weight. Teaching expertise also includes a capacity for interaction with colleagues in and outside the University concerning academic teaching issues.
Assessment criteria; other proficiency: Administrative expertise is important for this position and will be given weight. Ability to interact with the wider community and to inform the public about research and development is considered. Expertise in administration is shown in an ability to plan, organize and prioritize work efficiently and in a manner suitable for the purpose concerned, and through a capacity to specify and adhere to time limits.
Ability to collaborate in a group and actively participate in development work is significant. Likewise, the ability to coordinate as well as contribute to creating commitment, participation and job satisfaction as well as ability to handle conflicts make further examples of demonstrated skill.
In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
