Chemistry groups in Uganda

ISP Chemistry supports two research groups at Makerere University, Uganda:

• Environmental chemistry
• Green chemistry project

Environmental chemistry

The research group at Department of Chemistry, College of Natural Sciences, Makerere University, Uganda has received ISP support between 1999 and 2008 and again from 2015. In between the group was included in the Sida bilateral research programme.

The activities are coordinated by Dr John Wasswa.

Objectives

The group is focusing on emerging environmental challenges regarding organic chemical pollutants as well chemical pollutants derived from the oil exploration process in Uganda.

The overall objective is to strengthen capacity for research in environmental analytical chemistry at Makerere University through collaboration with international institutions.

Green chemistry project

The research group at Department of Chemistry, Makerere University, Uganda has received ISP support between 2002 and 2008, and again from 2016. In between the group was included in the Sida bilateral research programme.

The activities are coordinated by Dr Emmanuel Tebandeke.

Objectives

The overall objective of the research group is to develop catalytic processes for the conversion of selected waste and biomass into useful chemical products and materials for applications in different fields.
