Postdoctoral researcher in population genomics of polyploids
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.
The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se. A position as a postdoctoral researcher in population genomics of polyploids is available at the program Plant Ecology and Evolution.
Project description: Our group works on plant population genetics and evolutionary biology with a special emphasis on local adaptation and related questions. We study primarily two groups of plants: the tetraploid weed Capsella bursa-pastoris and its close relatives and forest trees (spruces, birches, larches and poplars). The present position is associated with a newly funded Swedish Research Council project that focuses on the evolution of genomic polymorphism and gene expression in polyploids, and more specifically on the importance of parental legacy in the evolution of allopolyploid species. In particular, we aim to test whether the evolution of gene expression is associated to deleterious alleles and whether this relationship is less pronounced in tetraploids than in diploids due to compensation. This work will be based on new genome and transcriptome sequencing in Capsella bursa-pastoris.
Duties: Plant husbandry, molecular biology (preparation of data for DNA and RNA sequencing), population genetics, expression data analyses and computer simulations. The applicant will be responsible for generating sequence data and analyzing them, and publishing articles.
Qualifications required: For this position the candidate must hold a PhD degree within population genetics or molecular evolution. The applicant is expected to have a solid background in population genetics, bioinformatics and statistics. Experience in standard bioinformatics and statistical methods and be familiar with UNIX/LINUX is a requirement. The applicant must have good ability to work in a group. The applicant must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.
To be eligible the candidate must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to this, completed less than three years before the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
Qualifications desired:Proficiency in relevant programming languages (e.g. bash, Perl, Python, C) will be a strong advantage.
Position: Temporary full-time position for 24 months, according to central collective agreement.
Salary: Individual salary.
Starting date: As soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.
Instructions for the application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and motivation of why you want to work as a postdoctoral researcher/fellow and why you are suitable for the position, 2) a CV, 3) a copy of your PhD degree, your grades and a copy of your thesis, 4) name and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.), 5) relevant publications.
