Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.
The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in the broad subject of computer science for both research and education at all levels. The department currently has about 300 employees, of which 110 are academic staff and 130 are active doctoral students. More than 4,600 students study here annually and there are approximately 30 research groups. One of these is the Centre for Image Analysis (https://www.cb.uu.se/), now recruiting an application expert in scientific visualization for InfraVis (https://infravis.se/) with placement at newly built premises at Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala.
Description of InfraVis
InfraVis is a national research infrastructure funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) in support of scientific advancement through the application of state-of-the-art data analysis and visualization techniques. The goals of InfraVis are to significantly improve data analysis support, address new challenges involving large and complex data and create competitive advantages for Swedish researchers. The infrastructure consists of visualization experts working with various software solutions and access to high-end visualization laboratories. Users of InfraVis will be offered assistance through a national helpdesk with rapid response times as well as in-depth projects addressing specific data and software challenges. InfraVis will also provide software solutions based on development in connected research groups, curation of international software and best practise, and user training in the form of courses, seminars and on-line documentation. To build an infrastructure with national coverage, we have pooled together nine visualization environments in Sweden interconnected in a nodal structure. The nodes will be hosted in proximity to research environments in visualization, which will enable direct access to the research front as well as to state-of-art facilities.
InfraVis application experts will be responsible for support and development in the visualization of scientific data. The general tasks for the application expert include advanced user support, selection of suitable software, scripting of tools, and training of user groups from many different research areas. See the description of InfraVis above.
We offer to collaborate in a national infrastructure with a large group of other InfraVis experts anchored at the nine different universities. The InfraVis application experts are encouraged to continue develop their professional and technical skills to keep up with developments in their field, as well as expand their knowledge in other fields, according to the interest of the employee and needs of the user community.
For this employment as an application expert, you must have a doctorate in visualization, computerised image analysis or equivalent from a nearby area. Good knowledge of existing visualization tools and methods used in visualization is a requirement, as is documented experience of setting up data pipelines to work with and visualize large amounts of data, including images of different dimensions, from different research areas. The applicant must have good professional English skills, both verbal and written. Good Swedish skills are a merit.
Emphasis will be put on good ability for independent and structured work, good initiative, ability to make priorities, accuracy and service minded, ability to run and complete tasks within given time frames, flexibility and very good collaboration skills.
It is an advantage if the applicant has work experience from a visualization environment and, for example, has worked with different display techniques for stereoscopic visualization in 3D. Experience with tools such as ParaView and VTK as well as programming in languages such as Python and C ++ is also an advantage, as is GPU programming and the use of computer clusters. We also consider experience from life sciences, digital humanities, and machine learning in our assessment.
The application should contain a personal letter that briefly describes why you are applying for this position with us and a Curriculum Vitae (CV).
