Entry requirements
60 credits in biology, or 45 credits in biology and 15 credits in chemistry or earth science
Learning outcomes
After the course the student should have the following skills;
- to search biological information on the web,
- to use basic software for studies of DNA sequences and protein structures,
- to use bioinformatics tools to solve biological problems, and
- to interpret results from various computer based methods.
Content
Treated issues; Compile sequence data. Basic sequence analysis. Databases and search in databases. Patterns in DNA sequences. Secondary structures. Three-dimensional structures of proteins. Alignments. Phylogenetic reconstructions. Metabolic reconstructions.
Instruction
Teaching consists of a series of problem-based computer exercises.
Assessment
Modules: Theory 2 credits; Computer exercises 3 credits.
To pass the course is required that all computer exercises equivalent to 3 credits is passed. The theory part is examined by a written examination equivalent to 2 credits.
