Entry requirements

7.5 credits in the areas of expression in convergent media/graphic design, interactive media or culture and media

Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to provide the student with knowledge and skills in 2D-computer graphics within convergent media. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Provide theoretical knowledge in the conception of converging media and how they are used to sketch, develop and describe an idea and its artistic appearance and design
  • demonstrate knowledge and skills in artistic visual communication of game ideas, themes and concepts using line, form, color and spatial design,
  • analyse, sort and process reference material and produce informative sketches of characters and environments, demonstrate ability to account for their ethical choices and aesthetic results, and describe the knowledge and arguments that underlie them, as well as
  • demonstrate the ability to formulate and solve tasks relevant to the content of the course within the time frame and with 2D digital tools implement visual features.

Content

The course provides an overall insight into graphic concept development for games where the focus is on the work process with visual idea development. The course addresses the graphic foundations of idea development and expression for application in a game production. The course deals with practical lighting, character design and basic visual development of game environments. The course also provides theoretical knowledge in visual communication and aesthetics.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures and assignments.

Assessment

Examination is in the form of assignments submitted throughout the course. Grading is based on the degree to which the submissions demonstrate an understanding and application of the theoretical, technical and artistic content in the course as specified in the goals and requirements for each assignment. Assessment grades are: Fail, Pass and Pass with distinction. To achieve the overall grade of Pass with distinction, a Pass with distinction grade is required for the majority of the submissions as well the final assignment.

PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING

Uppsala University takes cheating and plagiarism seriously and disciplinary actions will be taken against students suspected of being involved in any form of cheating and / or plagiarism. The disciplinary measurements are warning and shutdown for a limited time
