Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course students will be able to
- show awareness of the significance of the writing process in research
- show ability to write academic text in correct and idiomatic English
- show a good knowledge of formal aspects of academic writing
- present their research findings in a clear and structured manner.
Content
The aim of this course is to increase students’ awareness of the importance of the writing process and of the importance of using standard, academic English in research work. The course comprises practical exercises in composing abstracts, summaries and reviews of academic works, as well as conference presentations. Students will also compose a research paper that contains the proper apparatus for presenting primary and secondary references.
Instruction
Group sessions. Instruction, class discussions, and examinations are in English. All teaching materials are in English. Active participation in course seminars is obligatory.
Assessment
Students are examined in the form of oral presentations, written assignments, and a written home essay Grades are fail, pass, or pass with distinction.
Students who fail a regular examination will be offered a make-up examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.
Students who fail an examination twice have the right to apply to the head of the department for permission to change examiners or examination forms.
Other directives
If the curriculum or the course literature for a course is changed, students have the right to be examined on the original curriculum and course literature on three occasions during the following three semesters. After these three opportunities, the right normally expires.
