Entry requirements
120 credits including 30 credits in mathematics and 60 credits in physics, including Astrophysics I.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- calculate simple atomic, molecular and optical processes of relevance to astrophysical modelling
- make estimates for dynamical time scales and for the stability of astrophysical objects
- analyse astrophysical systems and identify dominant mechanisms
- construct simple models of astrophysical objects where radiation and/or dynamics play an important role, using both mathematical software and analytical estimates
- critically evaluate models used in contemporary astrophysics research
Content
Basic concepts of atomic, molecular and optical physics, and interaction of radiation and matter. Application to modelling (eg MATLAB) the state of matter and spectra in astrophysics.
Introduction to gas dynamics, including effects of gravitation. Application to modelling of dynamical processes within astrophysics, especially stars, their environment, and the interstellar medium.
Selected in-depth examples, e.g., early universe chemistry, dynamical processes in and around stars (pulsation, convection, stellar winds).
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, computer assignments and hand-in exercises. Individual presentations on selected topics.
Assessment
Computer assignments and hand-in exercises (8 credits) and oral and written presentation of literature project (2 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
