General provisions
The course is given within Master's Programme in languages and as an independent course.
Entry requirements
A Bachelor's degree with Indology as the main field of study. Also required is at least 30 credits at Master's level in Indology.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding For Master's degree (120 credits), the student should
- show knowledge and understanding within the main field of study, including both broad expertise in the area and considerably advanced knowledge within certain parts of the field as well as advanced understanding of current research and development;
- show advanced methodological knowledge within the main field of study.
Skills and abilities For Master's degree (120 credits), the student should
- show ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge, to analyse, assess and handle complex phenomena, issues and situations also with the limited information that underlies the essay ie relevant source material on Hindi/Sanskrit or possibly other South Asian languages in an extent of at least 100 normal pages that represent various types of source materials, and in the essay present source evaluation of this literature.
- show ability to critically, independently and creatively identify and formulate issues as well as to plan and with adequate methods carry out qualified assignments within given time frames by writing an essay (100000-200000 strokes woíthout spacing = about 40-80 pages excluding possible appendices) and present a theoretically or empirically developed study in a linguistic, cultural-historical or social sciences subject that concerns South Asia or linguistic fields that are relevant to the South Asian region and thereby contribute to the knowledge development and to evaluate this work.
- in Swedish or English write a stringent and well-structured essay according to established formal conventions regarding layout formalities and typography, including be able to choose citations and references on an academic skilled way. In addition to this, the student should master and apply the specific requirements of formalities within the field of Indology.
- show ability to, in both national and international contexts, orally and in writing give a clear account of and discuss his conclusions and the knowledge and the arguments that underlies these in dialogue with different groups.
- show such skills that is required to participate in research and development or to work independently in other qualified activities.
Judgement and approach For Master's degree (120 credits), the student should
- show ability to within the main field of study make assessments considering relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects and show awareness of ethical aspects on research and development.
- demonstrate an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the scholarship, its role in society and the responsibility of people for how it is used.
- show ability to identify his need of additional knowledge and to take responsibility for his knowledge development.
Content
Degree project in the form of Master's thesis.
Instruction
The teaching is given as individual supervision and essay seminars.
Assessment
The course is examined through an individual assignment (Master's thesis), and review of this.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
Other directives
The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent parts have been studied within another course included in the degree.
