About the course
The course introduces the scientific description of linguistic meaning and a historical review of various approaches to the description of purpose in language. This includes basic semiotics, lexical and compositional semantics are both discussed. The course also contains extensions and extensional analysis (set theory), definitions and prototypes, an introduction to truth-value semantics and logical analysis as well as the relationship between semantics and pragmatics. The course also treats basic pragmatics such as presupposition, tropes (for example, irony, metaphor and metonymy), speech acts, conversational maxims and implicatures.
