The effect of obtaining a driver’s license on labour market outcomes

The aim of this project is to evaluate the effect of obtaining a driver’s license on labour market outcomes, such as income and employment.

A driver’s licence is not only a prerequisite for many kinds of occupations but also enables more geographically distant jobs. Moreover, we are interested in the labour markets for professional drivers (e.g. taxi and bus drivers). A large share of professional drivers are foreign born so estimating the effect of obtaining a commercial driver’s license is particularly important when evaluating labour market integration of immigrants. Consequently, it is of great interest, both from an academic and a societal perspective, to understand the economic impact of a driver’s license.

The project combines data from the Swedish Transport Agency with data from Statistics Sweden.
