Defect Engineering of low dimensional materials

Local functionalization technique independent of using resist.

Defect engineering of graphene refers to the application of controlled defects in the modification of graphene structure and properties. In ELMIN group, we utilize focused ion beam technique to realize precise control of the defects in graphene structure followed by serials of analysis using Raman, XPS, STM, AFM, TEM, etc.

By inserting defects, the gas sensing property of graphene is increased 30% and the electrical property is also enhanced by vacancy insertion. Based on the local radicalization of graphene by the precise control of inserting defects, we developed a technique inside FIB to achieve graphene fluorination with fluorine atoms predominately localized only at defect sites.

This is technique is a local functionalization technique independent of using resist, and potentially allows wide range of gases to functionalize graphene.
