Electrochromism

Improve the electrochromic properties and durability of electrochromic systems.

The research

Electrochromism is an energy-saving technology which allows control of the amount of solar heat and visible light transmitted by a thin film. Electrochromic thin films are integral parts of multi-layer devices, that are capable of varying their optical properties by application of an externally applied voltage. Electrochromic devices have received a great deal of interest for potential applications in displays such as mobile phones, price labels, and smart cards as well as in windows such as smart windows, mirrors, and eyewear. Smart windows which are able to provide energy efficiency and indoor comfort and are currently used in modern buildings. This technology is able to significantly reduce energy use for cooling, air conditioning and illumination. In addition, there is a growing interest in multi-functional electrochromic devices, which can provide energy storage and energy production functionality together with control over light and/or heat.

In our projects, we aim to improve the electrochromic properties and durability of electrochromic systems and to combining electrochromic technology with electrolysis for hydrogen production stores the gained renewable energy in a carbon-free fuel.
