Healthy Ageing Initiative

The Healthy Ageing Initiative (HAI) began as a health examination for 70-year-olds in Umeå municipality but quickly evolved into an intervention study.

Today, nearly 7000 70-year-olds have received the intervention, focusing on increased physical activity, improved diet, and weight loss for those who were overweight. The aim was to reduce common diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. The cohort's results are now being used to search for risk factors for both common and rare diseases. Additionally, the goal is to conduct a genome-wide association screening for all participants to better prevent disease through precision medicine, using both genetic markers and other risk factors collected during health examinations.
