FAQ Basic Swedish

How do I apply for the Basic Swedish courses? You apply for the Basic Swedish courses through your exchange coordinator when applying for the rest of your courses.

When does the application for the courses open? During the spring semester, you have a guaranteed spot in our courses if you apply between March 15th and April 15th. The same applies during the fall semester, from September 15th to October 15th.

What are the eligibility requirements? For all of the Basic Swedish courses you need to be an Uppsala University student, registered in at least another course.

Basic Swedish 1 is at the beginner level and has no other eligibility requirements. If you have applied for Basic Swedish 2-4, you need to take a diagnostic test to be placed at an appropriate level (if you haven’t passed the earlier course(s)).

Which level should I apply for? If you have no prior knowledge of Swedish, we recommend applying for Basic Swedish 1. If you have some knowledge of Swedish, we recommend applying for one of the higher levels so that you can take a diagnostic test and be placed at the right level. It's possible that you may be placed at a level higher or lower than the one you applied for.

When and where do I take the diagnostic test? The diagnostic test is digital and taken on the computer. You don't need to be present on-site as the test can be taken from home. You will receive an email when it is available to take.

What happens if I miss the diagnostic test? If you miss the diagnostic test, you can email basic@nordiska.uu.se to arrange a late test.

When will I find out if I have been admitted? If you have applied within the mentioned dates, you have a guaranteed spot in the course. You will receive more information through communication with your exchange coordinator. Approximately 2-3 weeks before the course starts, you will also receive confirmation via email.

Is there a waiting list? Yes, if you have applied for the course but did not get a spot, you will be placed on a waiting list. After the course starts, we admit students from the waiting list in order.

How do I register? We will assist you in registering for the course in Ladok.

How do I choose a group? If you have been admitted to the course, the information on how to choose a group will be included in the same email as your acceptence letter.

Can I switch groups? Yes, if there is availability in the group you want to switch to or if you find another student to switch with. Email basic@nordiska.uu.se

How do I access my schedule? You can access your schedule on the course page in Studium.

Where are the classes held? The classes take place on-site at Campus Engelska parken.

Can I study remotely? No, we do not offer the course for remote learning.

How do I register for the exam? You register for the exam through Ladok. Information about this will be available on the course page in Studium as the exam dates approachs.

What happens if I fail the exam? If you fail the exam, there will be a re-examination opportunity a few weeks later.

What happens if I cannot attend any of the exam dates? In that case, you have the option to take the exam in the following semester when the course is offered again.

Where can I view my grades? You will be able to see your grades in Ladok.

Can I retake the course if I don't pass? Re-registration is subject to availability, and it's not something we can guarantee. Please contact us at basic@nordiska.uu.se.

Does the course provide any specific eligibility for other courses? No, it does not grant eligibility for other higher-level courses, nor does it correspond to any eligibility at the high school level.

What is the equivalence of the Basic Swedish courses on the CEFR scale? The courses are not linked to the CEFR scale, so there is no direct equivalence. However, a comparison can be made regarding the content of the course. Basic Swedish 1 - A1, Basic Swedish 2 - A2, Basic Swedish 3 - B1, Basic Swedish 4 - B2.

Why am I allowed to take the course without paying the fee? It is an initiative from Uppsala University to offer language courses to more students.

If I want to pay the fee for the course, can I be registered and receive grades? Yes, that is possible. You need to contact feemaster@uu.se if you wish to pay for the course.
