Higher education has many purposes. Are different interests in conflict with one another or is it possible to reconcile all the various perspectives? This is the subject of a panel discussion organised by Uppsala University at Almedalen.

The initiative for the discussion comes from Tora Holmberg, Vice-Rector at Uppsala University. The panel will include researchers, members of the Swedish parliament (the Riksdag) and representatives of the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and the Swedish National Union of Students. The moderator will be Linda Wedlin, Director of the Democracy and Higher Education research programme.

The discussion will take place against the backdrop of public debate in recent years focusing on higher education. This debate has ranged across academic freedom, the scale of higher education, contents and financing.

“We think there is a need for a broader and more nuanced discussion, with a deeper understanding of the actual purposes and goals of higher education,” says Linda Wedlin.

“This is important to enable us to move forward so as to arrive at a greater consensus around what we need to do and how we need to develop higher education in order to achieve these various goals and purposes.”
