Dag Blanck awarded Torgny Segerstedt Medal

Dag Blanck, Professor of North American Studies at Uppsala University, will be awarded the Torgny Segerstedt Medal for 2024. As one of the leading experts in Sweden, he has spread knowledge about Swedish-American relations in areas spanning history, politics and social life.

The Torgny Segerstedt Medal was established to honour Torgny Segerstedt for his 23 years as Vice-Chancellor at Uppsala University. It has been awarded every other year since 1988 to “Swedish researchers for particularly commendable efforts in the humanities and social sciences.”

This year, the medal will be awarded to Dag Blanck, Professor of North American Studies at the Department of English. The award citation:

“Professor Dag Blanck is one of the truly leading experts in Sweden on North America. For many years, he has made a decisive contribution to educating people about Swedish-American relations, and through active collaborative work has demonstrated how research in the humanities and social sciences can produce a better understanding of the United States in terms of its history, politics and social life.”

In addition to the medal, he will receive a prize sum of SEK 250,000.

The Torgny Segerstedt Medal will be awarded during a ceremony on the occasion of the University’s birthday on 7 October.

The Torgny Segerstedt Medal

  • The medal was instituted in honor of Torgny Segerstedt for his work as Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University for 23 years and was first awarded in 1988. It is awarded every other year to ‘Swedish scholars for especially meritorious work in the arts and social sciences.’
  • The recipient of the medal is selected by a committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, acting as chair, and the deans of the faculties of theology, law, social sciences, history-philosophy, and languages.
  • The medal is awarded at the University’s anniversary celebration in October.
