Batteries Sweden (BASE)

Batteries Sweden (BASE) is a competence centre for battery research funded by Vinnova. With innovation-driven research projects, where academia and companies collaborate, BASE creates a stable platform for excellent world-leading battery research in Sweden. The platform enables the implementation of new scientific breakthroughs in industrial applications, which strengthens Sweden's ability to compete in a future battery market.

BASE develops innovative solutions for cheaper, sustainable and environmentally friendly batteries with high energy storage capacity. The focus is on the development of new materials, components and battery cells, based on lithium but also other substances. An important part is also to ensure environmentally friendly production through the use of life cycle assessment (LCA) and recycling.

The centre's long-term vision is to contribute to energy storage solutions, which are necessary for the transition to a fossil-free society.

BASE currently has 21 partners: 17 industrial and 4 academic. Funding comes from academia, industry and Vinnova, with a total budget of around 100 MSEK. The Centre is planned to run for 5 years from 2020 to 2025 and will engage experts from academia and industry who share the common goal to develop ultra-high performance batteries.
