Entry requirements

Academic requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university.

Also required is 60 credits in gender studies.

Language requirements

Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Aims

The student should acquire broad and deep knowledge in gender studies and good analytical ability. The student should also acquire the prior knowledge that is required for entry requirements to doctoral studies and for advanced tasks in different parts of the labour market.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in gender studies that include broad expertise as well as considerably advanced knowledge in certain parts of the subject, and advanced knowledge in current research and development work
  • show advanced knowledge in gender research methods

Competence and skills

  • demonstrate the ability to integrate gender research knowledge critically and systematically, to analyse and assess and handle complex phenomena, issues and situations also with limited information
  • demonstrate the ability to critically, independently and creatively identify and formulate gender research issues, to plan and carry out qualified assignments with adequate methods within given time frames and thereby contribute to the knowledge development in gender studies, as well as to evaluate this work
  • show ability to, in both national and international contexts, orally and in writing, give a clear account of and discuss their conclusions as well as the knowledge and arguments that underlies these in dialogue with different groups
  • show such skills that is required to participate in research and development work or to work independently in other qualified activities

Judgement and approach

  • demonstrate the ability to make assessments considering relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects within gender studies and show awareness of ethical aspects on research and development work
  • demonstrate an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and the responsibility of people for how it is used
  • show ability to identify their need of additional knowledge and to take responsibility for their own knowledge development

Layout of the programme

The programme includes two years of full-time studies and contains courses of 75 credits and a Master's Thesis of 45 credits. The students are also given the opportunity to do a period of internship. The terms 1 and 4 contains compulsory courses in gender studies at the second-cycle level. Term 2 consists of a compulsory course and then the student chooses three of the four courses that are given at The Centre for Gender Research. Term 3 consists of elective courses, and here, there is possibility to do an internship of 7.5 credits or 15 credits or participate in international student exchange within the framework of the exchange agreement of the university. The basis for the Master's Thesis is placed in term 1 through theory and method courses. Thereafter, the thesis is written over three terms where the emphasis lies in term 4.

Students who want to take out a magister degree of 60 credits take the compulsory courses during term 1 and write a thesis about 30 credits during term 2. There is also possibility for students with an earlier magister degree of 60 credits to supplement their studies to receive a Master of Arts degree (120 credits).

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Arts degree (120 credits) with gender studies as main field of study. It is possible to take out a magister degree (60 credits) after one year of studies.
