Meet a student on the programme

Name: Nele Popp
From: Germany

The best thing about studying in Uppsala is, hands down, the support that the lecturers and professors give their students. They are all very approachable, happy to help with questions, and want to see you succeed.

How did you choose your programme?
– I have loved the Early Modern Period since starting my history studies, and I wanted to focus even more on this period. I really appreciate the programme’s focus on cultural and social history since these are the topics most interesting to me within this period. Choosing this Master’s programme combined my academic interests with a great student life.

What is it like to be an international student?
– It is great. There are a lot of other international students, and the University does a lot to welcome new international students upon their arrival. Most people speak English, so you’ll have an easy time getting through daily life. However, the bureaucratic stuff that you’ll have to do when moving here is a nightmare. So start with it early.

What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– The best thing about studying in Uppsala is, hands down, the support that the lecturers and professors give their students. They are all very approachable, happy to help with questions, and want to see you succeed. Furthermore, the University offers many opportunities such as guest lectures, summer schools, and the opportunity to see some special collections.

Describe the student life
– The student life here is awesome and certainly like nothing I have ever experienced before. Uppsala has thirteen student associations called nations, which represent different regions here in Sweden. They organise most of the student life around here: lunch, brunch, cafés (Fika), and even pubs and restaurants. They also hold fancy dinners where they sing a lot – it is super fun and definitely worth trying. You can work at the nations too, and it is definitely the best way to meet people here, especially outside of your programme.

Name three things you’re doing this week!
– This week, I will try to take it a bit slow since I just handed in my Master’s thesis. However, I will enjoy the nice weather and read one or two of the theses of my classmates to attend their opposition. Then I am going to Spring Ball on Saturday. It is one of the dinners I mentioned earlier and probably one of the fanciest we have in Uppsala!

What is your reason for studying and your ultimate goal?
– I started the programme with the goal of following an academic career, and I plan to do a PhD in the future.

Two quick questions:
What is your favourite place in Uppsala?
– My nation!

Where is the best place to study?
–At the Department of History, of course (no joke)! And usually, the nations are pretty nice, too!

Spring 2023.
