Learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should be able to

  • know and understand the elementary principles of Statistics
  • Identify statistical methods generally used in Earth Sciences
  • carry out test of hypothesis

Content

Discrete and continuous variables. Frequency distribution, class intervals and frequency curves. Different types of means: arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means. Measures of dispersion and moments. Elementary probability theory. Normal distribution, elementary sampling theory, Students t-distribution, the chi-square distribution, curve fitting and the method of least squares.

Lectures and exercises.

Assessment

Examination is held at the end of the course. Grading on the scale 3, 4 or 5 is given provided the examination and the exercise are completed and deemed approved. Written examination corresponds to 4 ECTS-credits and exercises 1 ECTS-credit.
