General provisions

The course is aimed at giving the students basic knowledge in surgery, especially surgical treatments in the thorax, in the abdomen and vascular surgery.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student will have basic understanding of, and be able to explain the following theoretically.

- Principles of wound healing

- Different methods of anaesthesia and pain relief

- The most common surgical procedures in the thorax, the breast, the neck, the abdomen and the vascular bed

- The basic pathophysiology behind the conditions preceeding the surgical treatment.

- Basic principles of trauma care

- Basic principles of post operative care

- The most common postoperative complications and measures to avoid these

Content

The development of surgery. Wounds and wound healing. Basic pathophysiology and basic principles for the most common surgical procedures in the thorax, the breast, the neck, the abdomen and the vascular bed. Basics of preoperative assessement, anaesthesia, postoperative care and surgical complications. Basics of trauma care.

Instruction

The course is given as lectures.

Assessment

Satisfactory completion of the course requires passed written examination/active participation in group examination.

Students who have not passed the examination are offered to sit for further examinations 4 times (=totalt 5 examinations). If the student can adduce special reasons the programme committee can admit an additional examination. Every time the student actually sits for an examination will be counted as an examination. Submission of a so called blank test is counted as an examination.

​If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
