Learning outcomes
After completed course, the student should be able to: - describe common methods for appeared of synthesis; - describe the structure of crystalline and amorphous polymers; - account for molecular structure and physical properties of common polymers; - describe the most common processing methods of polymeric materials, for example extrusion, injection moulding, rotation moulding, vacuum forming and blow moulding; - describe methods for characterisation of polymeric materials; - give examples of uses of polymeric materials and composites that include polymeric material.
Content
The course intends to provide basic knowledge within polymer technology. The course focuses around general polymer chemistry, the mechanical properties of polymers, the processing and production of polymeric details. Further, the analysis of polymeric materials is described by means of different thermal, spectroscopic and mechanical methods. In the course, the students may particularly train to work in groups and to present work both orally and written. Laboratory work: The laboratory session consists of polymer synthesis and characterisation of mechanical properties. After carrying out projects the student should be able to, - On the basis of a given recipe carry out a simpler polymer synthesis. - Choose analytical technique to characterise the mechanical properties of the product. - Assess risks during synthesisof polymeric materials. - In writing compile and present the completed laboratory work.
