Entry requirements

University degree, minimum of 180 credits in medicine, nursing, nutrition or another area relevant to international health.

English test (IELTS min 6, TOEFL min 550 paper based test).

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the course students should be able to:

Analyse public health risks in disasters, and plan for needs assessments including nutritional surveys

Compare different international standards and guidelines for the delivery of response to disasters

Identify and critically analyse the relationship between gender, health and disasters

Plan for the subsequent management and evaluation of various interventions

Content

Health care systems for protecting public health in disasters including health services, water and sanitation and health promotion

Epidemiology in disasters, including needs assessment techniques

Disease control and control of epidemics in emergencies

The most common communicable diseases in disasters (Diarrheal diseases, Acute respiratory infections, Malaria, Measles, HIV/AIDS)

Gender analysis

Food aid, including nutrition surveys, food distribution, and food interventions

Disaster management, including project planning and evaluation of interventions

Instruction

Interactive lectures, seminars, group work, tutorials, individual paper writing

Assessment

Assessment of the students' achievements are obtained through a quiz (20%) and a group work presented in a 3000 word paper, describing a plan for an intervention, at the last day of the course (89%).

Other directives

This is an optional course within the Master's program in International Health. Priority will be given to applicants who take this course as part of the Master's Programme in International Health or within the TropEd Europe network.
