Entry requirements
120 credits with 60 credits Chemistry, including Organic Chemistry 15 credits or Physical Chemistry 15 credits or equivalent. NMR Spectrscopy 5 credits is recommended.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the participant should have the ability to:
- Plan and conduct a midlevel organic synthesis, including construction and dimensioning of the required equipment.
- Conduct simple organic syntheses individually and in groups.
- Isolate and purify reaction products from reagents and byproducts, including the selection of an appropriate method to determine purity, and the performance of analyses with HPLC and GC regarding purity.
- Use spectroscopic equipment such as MS, IR, NMR spectrometers.
- Identify organic compounds by analysis and interpretation of spectral data.
- Explain common terms in NMR spectroscopy such as chemical shift, coupling constant, and anisotropy and describe how they are affected by molecular structure.
- Analyse and interpret 1D and 2D NMR spectra.
- Use the above knowledge in a critical manner to suggest the structure of unknown compounds based on their spectral data.
Content
Practical applications of methods for separation such as GC and HPLC. Purification methods such as chromatography, distillation and recrystallisation. Spectroscopic methods for structure analysis such as mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Subject-integrated training in communication skills with feedback and self-evaluation.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, and laboratory work. Exercises in oral and written presentation. Laboratory work and related presentations are mandatory.
Assessment
Written examination is arranged at the end of the course. The laboratory work must also be passed. The written examination corresponds to 2 HE-credits. The laboratory exercises including written and oral presentations are valued as 3 HE-credits.
