Entry requirements
Nursing degree and at least two years of professional or vocational experience as a registered nurse. Diabetes care I á 15 credits.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should independently be able to
- diagnose educational needs
- identify attitudes and motivation in individuals with diabetes to plan patient education
- plan, carry out and evaluate patient and family education
- suggest patient education in relation to different preconditions in individuals with diabetes and their relatives
- evaluate health and quality of life that effect measures in patient education
- explain the concepts of empowerment, coping and compliance
- review scientific work within the diabetes disciplinary domain critically

Preconditions and methods for information to patient and relative
Preconditions and methods for patient and family teaching
Attitudes, motivation, empowerment, compliance and coping
Diagnostics of educational need (educational diagnosis)
Health and quality of life as measurements in patient education
Research in patient education and programme evaluation
Practical training in patient and family education and evaluation of effects of completed education
Evidence-based patient education
Instruction
Lectures, group assignments, educational exercises including video recordings, literature studies and follow-up seminars.
Assessment
To pass the course, participation in the lectures, passed implemented educational assignment of a selected patient, relative or patient group and an individually written report about the assignment that is defended at an examination seminar are required.
