120 credits including Genome Bioinformatics.

Learning outcomes

The course is focused on having the student apply previous knowledge in bioinformatics to biological problems.

After passing the course, the student should be able to

  • Make proper use of the information that can be found in the scientific literature and bioinformatic databases
  • From ongoing research, define a biological problem in bioinformatic terms and to plan and carry through a project to solve the problem
  • Apply previously acquired knowledge in bioinformatics and search, value and, if needed, further develop existing bioinformatic tools
  • Communicate the proceeding of the project within the student group and to persons without special bioinformatic competence
  • Critically analyse, value and summarise the obtained results and present those in writing as well as orally

Content

The course is performed in smaller projects within relevant and up-to-date research areas. These could for example be models for molecular evolution, sequence aligning, gene prediction and genome annotation, phylogenetic analysis, gene expression analysis and metabolic reaction pathways or structure of protein and RNA. The course also entails literature seminars and seminars where the progress of the student projects are discussed
