Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree, and in addition courses in Earth Science of at least 30 credits at Master's level, including courses at Master's level that are necessary for the project. Admission requires a project plan accepted by the department.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should be able to

  • show a deep knowledge within the chosen field of Earth Science
  • search, interpret and compile relevant scientific literature
  • delimit a scientific problem, plan a scientific study of the problem, choose appropriate methods, carry out the study, interpret and evaluate the results, and, if applicable, present testable hypotheses to explain the observetations
  • present the results in correct language for different target groups ranging from science to popular science.

Content

An independent project is carried out, where the knowledge achieved from earlier competed courses are applied. The assignment is guided by a supervisor and carried out in close connection to ongoing research or development projects.

To achieve the objectives the student supported by the supervisor should

  • define and investigate a scientific problem, interpret, evaluate and present (written and oral) the resuls
  • searach, evaluate and compile information relevant for the project
  • participate actively in in seminars and other relevant activities at the research programme(s) or working site where the project i carried out.

Instruction

The teaching is devised individually dependant on the direction of the project. Supervision is provided individually or in group.

Assessment

To pass, a passed oral and written presentation of the degree project at a seminar is required. The written presentation should consist of a scientific report, a popular summary and a summary (abstract) in English.
