Entry requirements

120 credits with knowledge and skills corresponding to 60 credits in Earth Sciences, including Structural Geology and Ground Stability 10 credits (1GV007) and Field Course in Earth Science 5 credits (1GV031), together with Mineralogy and Petrology 15 credits (1MP000), or equivalent knowledge.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course the student should be able to

• explain tectonic processes and the resulting phenomena on various scales
• explain plate tectonic processes, and the global evolution of continental crust
• relate petrological processes to different tectonic environments
• apply various methods for strain analysis
• interpret and describe microstructures
• explain the experimental methodologies for the study of tectonic processes
• construct geological cross-sections from given surface data and the interpretation of structural geological measurements

Content

General part: Tectonic processes which affect the planet and develop sedimentary basins. Orogenesis (mountain building) in various plate tectonic environments with examples from different mountain chains and tectonic basins.

Methodological part: strain analysis, optical microstructures, analogue, numerical and geochemical modelling, as well as interpretation of bedrock maps, structural geological, geochemical and geophysical data.

The course includes subject-specific training in communication through feedback and critical evaluation.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars and practicals. The participation in group sessions and seminars is compulsory.

Assessment

Compulsory tests during the course and examination at the end. Additionally, the compulsory parts must be approved. Written examination 10 credits and compulsory tests, practicals and seminars 5 credits.
