Entry requirements

Chemical Principles I/Basic Chemistry, 10 credits.

Learning outcomes

The student must after finishing the course be able to:

- relate important elements to their occurrence in the Earths crust and their use in society

- account for the principles for element manufacture from various minerals

- discuss reactions between acid and basic oxides

- understand simple weathering processes in aqueous conditions

- interpret simple redox diagrams

- interpret simple phase equilibrium diagrams

- discuss alternative methods of phase analysis

Content

Overview on how elements occur in Earths crust. Selected examples (with industrial relevance) of production processes through redox reactions applied onto various compounds. Illustrations of acid and basic oxides. Ellingham diagrams or similar graphs. Phase diagrams and heterogeneous equilibria. Examples of usage in society of elements as such or in various compounds. Orientation on geobacteria.

Laboratory work: X-ray diffraction and light microscopy. X-ray spectroscopy. Ion exchange.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises and practicals.

Assessment

Written exam (3 credits), passed laboratory curriculum (2 credits). The final grade is weighted.
