Learning outcomes

After passing the course the student should be able to

  • explain tectonic processes and the resulting phenomena on various scales
  • explain plate tectonic processes, and the global evolution of continental crust
  • relate petrological processes to different tectonic environments
  • apply various methods for strain analysis
  • interpret and describe microstructures
  • explain the experimental methodologies for the study of tectonic processes
  • construct geological cross-sections from given surface data and the interpretation of structural geological measurements

Content

Tectonic processes which affect the planet and develop sedimentary basins. Orogenesis (mountain building) in various plate tectonic environments with examples from different mountain chains and tectonic basins.

Methodological part: strain analysis, optical microstructures, analogue and 3D modelling, as well as interpretation of bedrock maps, structural geological, petrological and geophysical data.

The course includes subject-specific training in communication through feedback and critical evaluation.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars and practicals. Participation in practicals and seminars is compulsory.

Assessment

Written examination 5 credits, practical exam 5 credits, and practicals and seminars 5 credits .
