Quantum Mechanics and chemical bonding I, 5 credits.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to

  • describe chemical bonding in polyatomic molecules with molecular orbital theory
  • describe the bases for the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter
  • account for the most common spectroscopic methods and use these to solve technical and scientific problem
  • account for applications within technique and society

Content

Molecular orbitals, bonding and anti-bonding orbitals. Pi-electron theory. The valence bond model. Overview of computational chemistry. Spectroscopic measurement methodology. Absorption and emission of radiation. Vibrational and rotational spectroscopy, electronic transitions and photochemistry. Fluorescence and phosphorescence. Magnetic resonance. Application in industry and society.

Instruction

Lectures, problem solving sessions, project and laboratory work.

Assessment

Examination is organised during the course and/or at the end of the course. Written examination correspond 4 credits. The laboratory sessions and project correspond to 1 credit. The final grade corresponds to a weighted average of the results from the written examination, the laboratory work and projects.
