Learning outcomes

The overall goals of the course are that the student should learn: To size equipment for flowing fluids and heat exchanger. To gain basic knowledge about unit operations with heat and mass transfer. Learn to size and analyse separation equipment and process system to be able to choose equipment. After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the properties of and do calculations of flowing fluids.
  • Describe and size common types of pumps.
  • Describe and size common types of heat exchangers.
  • Give an account of the main principles of the different separation processes.
  • Define and solve the material and energy balances for different separation processes.
  • Numerically and graphically calculate the required number of ideal stages for a given separation process.
  • Calculate the real height of a column from the efficiency.

Content

The fundamental equations of fluid mechanics. Processes with flowing fluids. Application to decompression calculations, fluid metering, pumps and fans. Movement in porous beds. Heat transport through conduction, convection and radiation. Heat exchanger. Basic theory for heat and material transport with application to evaporation, distillation, absorption, leaching, and extraction. Mechanical unit operations as fluidisation, liquid mixing, sedimentation and filtration. Stirring. The system air-water with applications to drying. Report writing.

Instruction

The teaching is given as lectures, lessons, assignments and laboratory sessions. The laboratory sessions are compulsory.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course, 8 HE credits. For approval, passed laboratory course is also required, 2 HE credits.
