General provisions
The course is included in the X-ray Nursing Programme, semester 2 and contains 7.5 credits theory and 7.5 credits placement.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to
1. Describe and understand how X-ray radiation interacts with the body and creates an image and use existing radiation protection.
2. Describe parameters of importance for image quality at x-ray examinations and describe the basics in computed tomography -, mammography -, and ultrasonography.
3. Use the basic examination methodology at conventional x-ray examinations - and participate in computed tomography examinations and use current patient record systems.
4. Describe different phases in the research process and explain the characteristics of scientific reporting and critical review.
Content
X-ray technique and gas theory
Ultrasonography techniques.
Medical radiation biophysics and radiation protection.
The research process; scientific reporting and critical review, information retrieval, writing scientific papers and reporting.
Clinical education at conventional X-ray -, computed tomography -, ultrasonography -, mammography examination units.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars and study assignments individually and in groups.
Clinical education at the radiology department.
Assessment
The examination takes place continuously during the course as written and oral presentations both individually and in groups. The examination includes also assessment of active participation and approved achievements at the clinical practice. The course is completed with a written examination.
Student failing examination the first time is allowed 4 re-examinations (in total 5 examinations). Student failing the clinical education has the right to one renewed clinical education period.
