General provisions

The master project in infection biology is a degree project at the Master's Programme in infection biology.

Entry requirements

Minimum 60 credits of passed courses within the Master programme in infection biology/equivalent. Proof of skills in English to a level corresponding to English B in the Swedish secondary school. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test with the following minimum scores:

IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5

TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test and a total score of 90

Cambridge: CAE, CPE

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • search, critically evaluate and compile scientific literature of relevance to the project
  • participate in planning of a scientific study including delimitation of a scientific problem and selection of appropriate methods for analysis to perform the study within a given time frame
  • practically carry out, evaluate, interpret and document results of a scientific study
  • consider the social and ethical aspects of both the project and the results obtained, and the possible consequences these can lead to
  • in an understandable way, orally and in writing, present and discuss a scientific investigation

Content

The course consists of an independent advanced assignment and is carried out individually under supervision. Theoretical and methodological knowledge from completed courses of the Master programme in Infection Biology should be applied, broadened and deepened from a scientific perspective. The work implies literature search, project planning/performance, critical analyses of own results and scientific literature of relevance and also oral and written presentation. Students performing research at a department / corresponding are expected to participate in the department's / research group's regular seminars.

Following tasks are included in the project work

  • written project plan including a time schedule
  • practical implementation of the project plan
  • written report on obtained results
  • oral presentations, including defence and discussion of the work
  • popular science presentation at a poster session
  • written critical analysis of another student's written report

Assessment

To pass the course it is demanded that the

  • examiner approved the above listed written assignments, and that these are reported in accordance with the instructions
  • examiner approved the final oral presentation
  • supervisor assessed and approved the practical work and that this has been carried out in accordance with the project plan
  • student attended other fellow students' final presentation
