General provisions

Master programme course - track Master in Sustainable Management

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits with at least 90 credits in business studies. Proficiency in English. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Learning outcomes

Having completed the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Understand, communicate and discuss concepts and theories related to international business theory
  • Identify roles of MNCs and the SME sector in economic development with particular focus on growth and sustainability
  • Understand specific conditions that multinational companies (MNC) as well as small and medium size enterprises (SME) have to relate to in different cultural and socio-economic settings
  • Use acquired skills and insights when analysing cases of how MNC and SME may act in different cultural and socio-economic settings
  • Use theoretical insights regarding MNC and SME to analyse firms’ impact on society and vice versa in a global context

Content

The course focuses on central aspects of international business management as well as a discussion how MNCs and SMEs contribute to economic and social development in general and to local and regional development in particular. Various aspects on international management in different cultural and socio-economic contexts are presented and illustrated trough cases, papers and books as well as lectures and seminars.

Instruction

The course consists of compulsory seminars and lectures. The students work in teams and individually, and are expected to be active both during and in between seminars. The course will both include written and oral presentations. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The performance in the course will be evaluated on the basis of individual assignments. Furthermore, seminar and case assignment are used in group tasks in which students analyse articles and cases on MNC and SME. Participation in class discussions is taken into account. The course grades are Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G) or Fail (U)). The grades are based on an equal evaluation of individual and group performance. If the grade is Fail, a complementary written exam is required.

NOTE: Only completed courses can count toward a degree.

Uppsala University takes cheating and plagiarism seriously, and disciplinary action will be taken against any student suspected of being involved in any sort of cheating and/or plagiarism. The disciplinary action takes the form of warnings and limited suspensions.
