Learning outcomes

The overall purpose is to provide basic knowledge and skills in the visualisation of many kinds of data using 3D computer graphics (CG) and to provide students from different subjects, interdisciplinary perspectives across boundaries by working together from the standpoint of different scientific traditions.

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • identify, formulate and problematise an issue related to scientific analysis, documentation and 3D visualisation
  • understand and apply basic theories and methods in 3D computer graphics, such as modelling, texturing and rendering
  • understand and apply basic technologies used to construct 3D visualisation system
  • search, select and evaluate information and gather, process and interpret data
  • formulate a project description for a smaller own work and to plan, operate and carry out this work by prioritizing and time management, as well as communicate orally and in writing about their visualisation work and its technical and theoretical background.

Content

The course includes a visualisation work carried out under supervision. Visualisation work is a project that consists of a visualisation of scientific data using 3D computer graphics. The project combined with the documentation of the project in the form of a project report or essay.

The course begins with a series of lectures in visualisation technologies, 3D and 2D imaging techniques, philosophy of science, artistic knowledge and communication theory. Then follow the instruction in 3D CG representation and visualisation exercises and tutorials.

Instruction

Instruction consists of lectures, seminars, and practical project work with active student participation. Towards the end of the course the student works with a reflective report or essay written either in English or Swedish.

Part of the program may be conducted in English.

Assessment

The final assignment will be issued at the end of the course consisting of two works: 1) a production of a visualisation system and 2) a written reflective report and an oral presentation on the production.

Pass requires that all components are approved and active participation in seminars, practices and projects.

Other directives

The course substitutes/overlaps the course Visualisering med 3D-datorgrafik(5SD010) at Uppsala University
