Entry requirements

30 credits including a basic course in solid mechanics.

Learning outcomes

After a successfully completed course the student will be able to:

  • calculate principal stresses and strains, and their directions, for a general three-dimensional case,
  • calculate effective stresses using von Mises and Tresca’s criteria to judge limit states (i.e. plasticity),
  • use the basic features of a commercial Finite Element program,
  • to critically judge computed results.

Content

Two- and three-dimensional stresses and deformations: generalised Hooke's law: elastic energy. Strength and design criteria. FEM calculations.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and FEM exercises.

Assessment

Written examination (4 credits) and assignments (1 credit).
