Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students with a Pass grade will be able to:
- display an ability to use and also compare analytical methods for evaluating game designs.
- display an ability to apply theoretical design tools in forming and balancing game systems.
- display an ability to develop simpler kinds of prototypes with the aim of testing specific game system elements.
- show a fundamental understanding of game design documentation as a communication tool and be able to discuss the role of various documentation types.
- display an ability to write and present concisely a complete game design for simple games.
Content
The course begins with a review of design fundamentals whereupon students will explore how these basic design principles are applied to game design. As the course progresses, students will apply their knowledge by doing exercises centred on specific challenges within game design:
- providing a gamer with feedback
- balancing a game
- documenting game designs
The course will end with students being given a concept document describing a simple game. The students will have the task of developing this into a full-scale game design document.
